The UCSB Music Cognition Lab studies the relationship between cognitive processes and how people perceive and respond to musical structures. Our projects focus on listeners and how they engage with musical structures to create meanings based on various experiences and contexts. We focus primarily on musical categorization; analogical and metaphoric processing; modes of listening or engagement with music; different listener experiences; cross-modality and audio-visual relationship (with a focus on film music); musical associations, visual imagery, and narrative; relationships between music and language; and empirically testing music theories (e.g. topic theory). We use a combination of experimental (behavioral studies), corpus, and theoretical approaches to study issues of musical thought and behavior,
